IUG Allergy-Friendly Certification

IUG Allergy-Friendly is a German product seal from the Institut für Umwelt und Gesundheit, meaning Institute for Environment and Health.

For interior wall paints and coatings, the IUG “Allergiker-geeignet” seal is used for products that meet IUG criteria for suitability for allergy sufferers in indoor spaces.

How IUG is Assessed

IUG assessment criteria look at environmental and allergological factors. For interior wall paints, the IUG criteria include checks on:-

  • Allergy suitability - to meet IUG criteria around suitability for use by allergy sufferers indoors.
  • VOC emissions - test chamber limits for total VOC emissions and individual VOC groups.
  • Formaldehyde - limits are set on formaldehyde content and emissions.
  • Problem substances - The criteria restrict or exclude substances such as formaldehyde releasers, halogenated isothiazolinones, organotin compounds, certain heavy metals and allergenic disperse dyes.
  • Odour - Odour assessment is included in the criteria.
  • Ongoing control - IUG criteria requires independent checks, using IUG or accredited laboratories, with at least annual monitoring.

What IUG Means for Paint Customers

The product has been assessed against allergy focused indoor criteria, including emissions, odour, formaldehyde and substances that may be more problematic for users with chemical sensitivities, allergies, and asthma.
