Paint for Hallways, Stairs and Landings

The hardest working walls in the house. Breathable, low odour and tough enough for muddy boots, dog paws and pushchairs, so it looks good for longer, not just on the day you paint it.

The paints I'd actually use in a hallway

Hallways, stairs and landings get a lot of use. Probably more than most rooms in the house. So while breathability is important, this is one of those spaces where the paint also needs to be tough enough for muddy boots, dog paws, bags, coats, pushchairs and all the usual scuffs of daily life.

For walls, my go-to would be Grafclean. It is our best-selling emulsion, and for good reason. It is breathable, washable and virtually zero VOC. If your hallway gets a really hard life, I’d move up to Grafclean Eggshell, as marks and scuffs are much easier to wipe away. If you prefer a softer, chalkier, ultra-matt finish, Earthborn Claypaint is a lovely option too.

For woodwork, skirting boards, doors and banister rails, I’d use Grafclean Eggshell. It gives you a more practical finish for the areas that get touched, kicked and knocked every day.

Just want white? Grafclean in white is the simple, breathable option. Ambient Pro is the top-end air-purifying choice, while Nevada or Earthborn Eco Pro are good value options if you want to keep the cost down. If you have lime plaster or an older period property, I’d usually look at Graphenstone GCS Interior or Earthborn Claypaint rather than a standard emulsion.

Grafclean Natural Emulsion, White

AlternativeWant the air purifying top end option? Graphenstone Ambient Pro. On a tighter budget? Graphenstone Nevada or Earthborn Eco Pro.

Why it matters in a hallway

Your hallway takes more punishment than any other room

Muddy boots, wet umbrellas, a dog shaking itself dry, a pushchair clipping the skirting on the way past. Your hallway and stairs see more daily wear than anywhere else in the house, and it is the first thing anyone sees when they walk in. Conventional paint can chip, mark and dull fast under that kind of traffic. Breathable, mineral based paint holds its own without the fumes.

  • Breathable, so less damp and mould

Walls release moisture instead of trapping it, especially important right by a front door that lets in the cold and wet.

  • Wipeable finishes for the marks that happen

Eggshell on trim and a washable emulsion on the walls mean scuffs and handprints wipe away easily, not sink in.

  • Certified, not greenwashed

Our range includes paints that are VOC Class A+, vegan, cruelty free, microplastic and formaldehyde free. Each product lists its own certs.

Before you buy

How to choose, in 60 seconds

1
Matt or a little sheen?

Walls look calm in a breathable matt. For anything touched, hit or splashed, step up to eggshell so it wipes clean.

2
Muddy boots, dogs or a pushchair in daily use?

If your hallway takes serious daily traffic, step up to Grafclean Eggshell on the lower walls as well as the trim, so scuffs wipe straight off.

3
Always test the colour first

Order a peel and stick swatch or a tester and live with it for a day. Colours shift with your light. Get a swatch.

Why buy from us? I've run Greenshop here in the Cotswolds for over 25 years. We are fiercely independent and a real shop, not a paint brand trying to push only its own tins. I test and use the paints I sell in my own home, because this is personal for us. Cleaner indoor air genuinely matters to me.

That is why I only stock finishes that are better for you and better for the planet, with proper certifications behind them rather than vague green claims. More than 500 customers have reviewed us at 4.8 out of 5.
