Why does exterior wood need so much protection?

Exterior wood needs much more protection than interior wood for many reasons. Primarily the UV damage from the sun absolutely destroys wood and finishes over time, no matter what you protect the wood with. You can see this in your exterior wooden chairs and tables, they will grey and crack if not properly looked after, and most of this damage is from the UV.

The obvious reason is prolonged water damage, which eventually gets into the wood and starts the rotting process. Garden furniture is not cheap, so anything we can do to extend their life by another few years (or even decades) can be very much money well spent.

Exterior Oils for Wooden decking protection

Exterior wood decking needs protection not only from the UV we just mentioned, but also from the wear and tear of feet and shoes scuffing over it throughout the seasons, IE dry and scratchy through to waterlogged. Then there is the standing damp under plant pots and immovable items that stay in place longer than desired. Try the Auro decking oil.

Exterior wood preservatives.

Wood preservatives and biocides need to be handled with care, and due to new regulations we need to make sure that the Boracol we sell is only for trade professionals and not for your DIY user. Although Boracol wood preservative is made from mostly naturally occurring boric acid (borax is a naturally minder mineral that is refined to produce boric acid)

Borates such as boracol are very effective at preventing and protecting wood from fungi and decay and other organic rot. Although it is still classed as low toxicity, we must make it clear that it is still a natural and synthetic formulation due to the addition of benzalkonium chloride.

As far as we are aware Boracol is still one of the most ‘non toxic’ wood preservatives that we know of, and still widely used by people who also buy natural paints and eco friendly products. Please double check the data sheets before you purchase if you want to know more.
