Alkalinity and pH in Natural Paint

pH measures how acidic or alkaline a paint is. A pH of 7 is neutral. Natural paints like Lime, mineral and silicate paints all have high alkalinity, commonly sitting around 11 to 13.

In natural paint systems, high alkalinity helps the paint perform functions that conventional paints commonly achieve through synthetic resins, plastic forming binders, added preservatives or anti mould biocides.

How High Alkalinity Helps Natural Paint Perform

  • Anti mould properties - Highly alkaline paint formulations have natural mould and algicidal resistant properties. It does not rely on synthetic anti mould biocides that can leach out or lose effectiveness over time.
  • Preservative elimination / reduction - High alkalinity makes the paint less hospitable to bacteria, yeasts and mould, reducing or removing the need for preservatives such as MI, MIT and BIT in the base formulation. Coloured paints contain small amounts of preservatives from the tinting system.
  • Supporting breathable paint systems - Not all breathable paints are highly alkaline, but high pH ingredients in lime, mineral, and silicate paints discourage biological growth. The vapour open structure of lime, mineral, and silicate paints
