Eurofins Indoor Air Comfort Gold is a prestigious independent certification for low emissions into indoor air. It is used for building, decorating and furnishing products, including paints and coatings. Preservation of indoor air quality is at the heart of this certification.
What does this certification mean for paint shoppers? It's a valuable way to assess the impact of paint on indoor air quality because it focuses on what a product releases into the air after application.
Eurofins Indoor Air Comfort has two levels. Indoor Air Comfort confirms that a product meets relevant legal requirements for VOC emissions within the EU and member states.
Indoor Air Comfort Gold Criteria
Indoor Air Comfort Gold has more stringent criteria than the legal requirements for the base certification. Gold level meets stricter low emission criteria used by European ecolabels and building standards such as BREEAM, LEED and WELL and Cradle to Cradle as part of their wider product certification schemes.
It can support evidence requirements within those schemes where low VOC emissions form part of the assessment.

How is Indoor Air Comfort Gold Assessed?
Indoor Air Comfort Gold combines key European and wider requirements for VOC emissions and VOC content into one certification.
Assessment includes:
Emissions chamber testing - Product samples are tested in controlled chamber conditions to measure VOCs released into indoor air after application. Eurofins specifications reference EN 16516 and the ISO 16000 series for sampling and VOC emissions testing.
VOC content checks - The certification checks VOC content as well as emissions after drying, measuring ongoing fume release during the "off gassing" process that takes place in the weeks and months after paint is applied inside your home.
Factory control and surveillance - Eurofins includes factory production control and external surveillance of emission relevant processes, so certification is backed by ongoing checks.

Why Does Indoor Air Comfort Gold Matter For Paint Shoppers?
This is a particularly important mark of quality if you are sensitive or allergic to paint fumes. Indoor Air Comfort Gold is a strong indicator around:
Indoor air quality and health - Paint fumes and VOCs are linked with poor indoor air quality and health effects including eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches, nausea and respiratory irritation.
Low odour decorating - Very low emission paint is a better choice for bedrooms, nurseries, living spaces, schools, offices and healthcare settings.
Specification evidence - Indoor Air Comfort Gold can support VOC emissions evidence for BREEAM, LEED, WELL and Cradle to Cradle.
