Cradle to Cradle Certified® is an independent product sustainability certification. It assesses how responsibly a product is designed, made and managed across its lifecycle.
The certification looks at five performance categories: material health, product circularity, clean air and climate protection, water and soil stewardship, and social fairness. Together, these assess whether products are made with safer materials, responsible manufacturing processes and a more sustainable lifecycle in mind.
Cradle to Cradle Certification can help you compare paints with recognised sustainability credentials, but it does not replace practical product details such as breathability, VOC content, ingredients or surface suitability.
Cradle to Cradle Certification & Paint Purchasing Decisions
Cradle to Cradle is a sustainability certification covering a broad selection of products and materials. Paints can carry the certification when they have been assessed under the standard.
What this certification means:
Craddle to Cradle certification helps identify paints made with strong attention to sustainability, environmental impact, safer material choices for human health & nature, recycling potential and responsible manufacturing.
What's assessed:
Material health, product circularity, clean air and climate protection, water and soil stewardship, and social fairness.
How does Cradle to Cradle certification help you choose a sustainable paint?
It shows that the paint or coating has been assessed across several areas of sustainability, rather than relying on one isolated environmental claim.
Cradle to Cradle Certification Assessment Criteria
Cradle to Cradle Certified® is a Type I environmental label, meaning it aligns with principles used for ISO 14024 environmental labelling.
Cradle to Cradle Certified products are assessed over five main categories. They look at materials used in the product, how responsibly it's made, and how well it fits into a more sustainable product lifecycle.
The five categories are:
Material Health
Assesses the ingredients and materials used in the product for their impact on human health and the environment.
In paint terms, this covers the main formulation components, including binders, pigments, fillers, preservatives and additives.
Product Circularity
Assesses whether the product has been designed for a more circular lifecycle, including material choices, waste reduction, recycling potential, packaging and responsible end of life handling.
In paint terms, this means looking at how the product and its packaging are designed, sourced, used and managed after use, rather than only looking at what happens when the paint is applied.
Clean Air & Climate Protection
This assesses the product and its manufacturing process for air quality, energy use and climate impact.
In paint terms, this covers emissions, production impact and the manufacturer's wider climate responsibilities. It is broader than VOC content alone, so VOC figures should still be checked separately when comparing paints for indoor air quality.
Water & Soil Stewardship
Assesses how water and soil are protected during manufacture and across the wider supply chain.
In paint terms, this relates to responsible production, water use, waste water handling, raw material sourcing and environmental management before the paint reaches your home.
Social Fairness
This assesses responsible business practices, including how people and communities are treated within the product's supply chain.
In paint terms, this gives customers a wider ethical signal about the manufacturer. It's important for sustainability.
Cradle to Cradle Award Criteria
Products are awarded at Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum level. The overall level is based on the product's lowest scoring category, which encourages balanced performance across the whole standard.
Recertification must take place every three years and must show measurable improvement, so the certification is built around ongoing progress rather than a one-time award.
Active certifications can be checked in the Cradle to Cradle Certified Products Registry.
