EU Ecolabel is the official environmental label of the European Union. It's a voluntary third party certification used across a variety of product groups, including paints and varnishes.
For paint customers, EU Ecolabel gives independent evidence that a product has been assessed against environmental and performance criteria. That means you can be assured it's not just marketed as "eco friendly". For paints, the assessment criteria includes limits on hazardous substances and VOCs, as well as requirements for product performance.
What Does EU Ecolabel Assess?
Paint assessment under the EU Ecolabel criteria considers both environmental impact and performance. Paint durability is an important aspect of sustainability because the longer a paint lasts, the less often it needs to be reapplied, reducing product use, waste, packaging, transport and the environmental impact of redecorating.
EU Ecolabel is an ISO 14024 Type I ecolabel It's an independent environmental credential that looks at a product as a whole, rather than a single claim. When a paint has the Ecolabel, it means claims around sustainability and eco friendly credentials are trustworthy.
Certification Award Criteria
Ecolabel certification is not self declared, all products are independently assessed. The certification is awarded on a "pass or fail" basis. It doesn't have different award levels like Cradle to Cradle Certification.
To get EU Ecolabel certification paint must:-
- Meet hazardous substance restrictions - Criteria includes controls on harsh chemical preservatives, driers, formaldehyde, and synthetic polymer microparticles.
- Meet lower VOC & SVOC limits - paint must adhere to limits on volatile and semi volatile organic compound content.
- Meet relevant performance standards - such as spreading rate opacity, wet scrub resistance, and outdoor weathering.
