Recurring bedroom mould is a common problem in UK houses. Finding the best anti mould paint is a very important part of getting rid of the problem, but it’s also vital to identify and eliminate the causes of mould in your bedroom.
Conventional wall paints deal with mould through synthetic biocides locked into a plastic paint film. These types of paint will be effective in the short term, but over time the biocides degrade and lose effectiveness, the plastic film traps moisture inside the wall, and there can be ongoing exposure to low level chemical off gassing in your sleeping space.
In the long term, conventional wall paints often hide the problem temporarily, only for mould to return through staining, bubbling, or black spotting. Sealing your problems away behind a plastic film is not a permanent solution.
The best anti mould paint for bedrooms is one that works with the building, allowing moisture to escape safely while discouraging mould growth naturally. This is where many conventional paints, including some sold as “anti mould”, fall short.
What Causes Mould in Bedrooms
Before you pick up a paint brush, you need to look at the problem areas in your bedroom and work out what might be causing spore growth.
The most common causes of bedroom mould include:-
- Moisture released from breathing overnight.
- Poor ventilation, especially in winter.
- Cold external walls and thermal bridging, leading to condensation on cold spots internally.
- Furniture placed tight against walls, restricting airflow.
- Modern airtight homes or older solid wall properties painted with non breathable finishes.
Where mould typically shows up in bedrooms:-
- Top corners on external walls, and cold spots on ceilings.
- Behind wardrobes and large headboards.
- Around window reveals and above frames.
- Cold chimney breasts or boxed in corners.
The root cause is the same - moisture condenses on cold surfaces, creating conditions that mould spores love.
Best Anti Mould Paint for Bedrooms
There are two key natural paint technologies that consistently perform well in mould prone bedrooms:
- Highly breathable silicate based paints.
- Lime based anti mould paints.
Breathable anti mould paints support natural moisture movement through walls, helping surfaces dry rather than trapping condensation behind a plastic paint film. This significantly reduces the conditions mould needs to thrive, and creates a long term natural solution to the key conditions that promote mould growth in your bedroom.
AURO High Grade Silicate Paint No. 303
Auro 303 is the premium option for bedrooms where mould keeps returning and you want a durable, breathable finish.
Key properties:-
- Highly breathable - SD value < 0.01 (exceptionally vapour open, so moisture can actually escape).
- Natural mould resistance from alkaline silicate chemistry.
- VOC < 1 g/l, preservative free, low emission, low odour.
- Matt finish with strong opacity and wet scrub resistance Class 2 (more practical for lived in rooms).
303 is our premium anti mould paint and one of our bestselling products.
AURO Anti Mould Paint No. 327
Auro 327 is a traditional lime based anti mould paint with excellent vapour permeability.
Key properties:-
- SD value < 0.05 m (highly breathable paint).
- Pure lime paint with high natural alkalinity which creates natural mould resistance.
- Trace VOCs - The Technical Data Sheet for Auro 327 lists the VOC content at 0g/l. We have to be very careful about using the term VOC free or Zero VOC in paints due to UK regulatory requirements, but this is almost as clean as paint can be!
- Matt finish with a classic lime character.
This paint is ideal for mineral walls, lime plaster, and older buildings where maximum breathability is the priority and heavy scrubbing is not.
Which should you choose?
- Choose AURO 303 if you want the best overall performance for most bedrooms, especially where wipeability and durability matter.
- Choose AURO 327 if your walls are mineral or lime based, you want a traditional finish, and you prioritise maximum breathability. Note: Auro 327 has a lightly textured finish due to inclusion of natural lime in the formulation.
Why Natural Anti Mould Paint Works Better
Natural anti mould paint can be more effective as chemical based paints, and offers superior long term performance. Natural paint is ideal for bedroom application as it’s low or trace VOC, low fume, and beneficial for anyone sensitive to paint fumes or prone to respiratory irritation.
Our natural mould resistant paints use breathable mineral based formulas. Here is why that matters in bedrooms:
- Breathability - Natural breathable paints allow moisture vapour to escape rather than sealing it into the wall. This is especially important in UK homes where trapped moisture is a key driver of recurring mould.
- Naturally high pH - Silicate and lime paint systems are naturally alkaline. This creates an environment on bedroom walls and ceilings that inhibits mould growth through natural fungicidal and algicidal properties.
- Low VOC content - Our anti mould paint has trace VOC levels. Low VOC paint helps protect indoor air quality, which matters most in bedrooms where you are exposed for long periods while sleeping.
- Long lasting mould resistance - Because this approach relies on breathability and alkalinity rather than synthetic fungicides, it does not depend on additives that can reduce in effectiveness over time.
Anti Mould Paint and Mould Stains - What Paint Can and Cannot Do
Anti mould paint does not kill existing mould. If mould growth is visible in your bedroom, it must be cleaned and treated before repainting. Painting directly over mould almost always leads to staining bleeding back through and mould reappearing around edges or cold spots. Anti mould paint should be the final layer in the system, not the first step.
Before Repainting a Mouldy Bedroom - Prep and Prevention
Even the best anti mould paint will fail if it is applied over active mould or a damp surface. Painting over your problems will only make them worse!
Any visible mould must be fully removed before repainting. We recommend a simple two-step approach using our own natural anti mould cleaning system:-
- AURO 412 Mould Remover to clean and remove existing mould and surface spores
- AURO 413 Mould Stop to inhibit regrowth before repainting.
Simply painting over mould, or relying on paint alone to deal with staining, almost always leads to marks bleeding back through and mould returning.
Once treated, the wall needs to be allowed to dry properly. Painting over residual moisture traps damp behind the coating and undermines even the most breathable paint.
Ventilation also plays an important role. Bedrooms are often kept closed overnight, so improving background airflow where possible can significantly reduce moisture build up. Avoid placing large items of furniture hard against cold external walls, as this creates stagnant pockets where mould is most likely to form.
Only once the surface is clean, dry, and stable should anti mould paint be applied.
Why Barrier and Mould Covering Paints Fail in Bedrooms
Barrier paints and mould covering coatings attempt to block moisture rather than manage it. When you paint over mould or attempt to seal moisture inside your bedroom walls, your problems will come back to haunt you.
In bedrooms, moisture is generated internally overnight. When that moisture cannot escape, condensation forms behind the paint film. Over time this leads to bubbling, blistering, and mould returning more aggressively than before.
This is why sealing or “mould proof” paints often worsen bedroom mould in the long term.
Natural Breathable Paint to Combat Mould
We’re passionate about natural paints and know that the best way to have a mould free bedroom is to remove the causes of mould to prevent it returning. Naturally mould resistant paint is a key part of that process.
