Yellow Paint

Yellow Paint - Sustainable and Eco Friendly yellow paints for walls, ceilings and wood trim. Part of our range of natural paint colours.

The issue with historical use of yellow paints is that it was almost always (16th century onwards) manufactured using lead, and we all know that lead is not good news when absorbed or breathed in by our bodies. Sadly even now are having to be extremely careful when removing old layers of paint in older houses, especially when sanding so to not get lead into the air and into our airways, yuck.

Soft yellows used traditionally in colonial and Georgian homes were actually based more on limes and natural pigments rather than lead, but still lead persisted. Georgian homes used soft yellow and ochre yellows in stairwells and drawing rooms, and the Victorians preferred mustard tones in sitting rooms and entrance halls.

In the 1950s - 1970s synthetic colours became the norm, and bright colours were suddenly available. Post war Britain really loved 'harvest gold' and 'bold mustard'.  I'm sure lots of you out there (including myself) remembers more than one bright yellow kitchen persisting into the 80's!

By the late 80s bright yellows were in decline, being replaced with more earthy tones, although yellow still persisted in 'country style' homes.

Should I paint bedroom walls yellow?

Yellows seem friendly and inviting, so always can be a bold choice, however some people do find yellow to be a bit too energetic and overwhelming for a bedroom.

What colours go with yellow walls?

I always think that white, grey or soft neutral colours go well with yellow walls, but if you want something bolder then green or navy can work well! Earthy colours can also go well. Don't forget textures when designing your interiors!

How to paint over a yellow wall

Clean the wall to remove dirt and grease, use an undercoat such as Auro 321 white emulsion. 2 coats of quality natural emulsion paint such as Auro 555 wall paint should be sufficient to cover up the yellow painted wall. You should be able to use whatever colour you like over the undercoated yellow wall, whether it is an off white, or something bolder like blue or green wall paints
