Off whites have been a staple range of tones for centuries, creating a bit more of a softer edge, and more refined look as compared to stark whites, or white lime based lime washes. Off whites were traditionally manufactured by adding natural minerals and earth pigments to the white base paints, a look that adorned classical European interiors through to rustic countryside cottages. 

Off white wall and ceiling paints are truly versatile, and complement any tonal palette you choose, in any style house, whether modern 'minimalist', or traditional elegance. 

Fundamentally, the more popular off whites are more on the cream side of the spectrum, followed by other shades of 'yellow' added pigments, through to greys and warm beiges.

Ivory coloured off white paint is probably the most popular, created from a subtle hint of yellow. I love the Ivory tone, it just complements almost anything else in the room, from bold fabrics to subtle textures. Ivory coloured paint is usually a blend of white clay and yellow ochre tones. 

Antique white coloured 'off white' is a slightly more 'aged' tone that adds a little more character. Antique white is a mix of base pigments and traces of raw sienna.

Warm beige off white is a combination of white, umber and burnt sienna. This tone is a neutral off white with a subtle brown undertone for a calm and welcoming space. 

Cool grey off whites are generally created from a white base with small amounts of black or even a dash of ultramarine blue. Soft greys pair perfectly with contemporary interiors. 

Chalky white off white paint colour tone is inspired by a more traditional limewash tone, a very muted white matte paint derived from earth pigments and minimal tinting. A gorgeous natural depth. 

Colour Theory and Off-Whites

I really do think that off whites are absolutely essential due to their ability to balance and enhance other colours. Off whites act as a perfect backdrop, softening bold hues while providing depth to muted tones. 

Warmer off-whites, with yellow or beige undertones, create a sense of warmth and comfort, making them ideal for living spaces and bedrooms, I love an off white ceiling to complement a coloured wall.  Cooler off-whites, with hints of grey or blue, evoke a crisp and modern aesthetic, perfect for contemporary interiors.
