Plasterboard Primer Paint - Which Do I Need?

Nov 08, 2024Chris Ridley

Plasterboard primer paint is pretty much the same thing you use when you are painting on fresh (or old) wall plasters such as gypsum.

Fundamentally if you're using our range of Auro paints, then the Auro 505 Universal Primer Grip coat would be the best choice to use, it's also the most modern recipe, and the one recommended by Auro themselves.

However, we have found great results from the older Auro 301 primer, which is a little cheaper than the Auro 505 Universal Primer Grip coat , so well worth using if you have lots of surface to cover with plaster primer.

What Primer to use on Plasterboard?

I suggest the Auro 505 Universal Primer Grip coat , or the cheaper and older  Auro 301 primer,

Does Plasterboard Need Primer?

Yes, plasterboard need a primer, or a mist coat before the top coat. Whether it is older or new plasterboard the process is the same, although you may want to spend some time filling holes and cracks with wall filler before you apply primer.

Priming Plasterboard - How To

Priming plasterboard after installation or before fresh decoration is very straightforward.  Simply wipe down the surface to ensure it's dust free, and fill any joints, holes or cracks. You can then apply your mist coat or plasterboard primer paint.

To ensure a good decorative finish after priming plasterboard, apply evenly and allow to dry fully before painting or papering.
